Abstract: This paper concerns the role of material-cultural evidence in informing on past household practices, the places where they were performed and the people who carried them out. Using remains from Pompeii, it illustrates how analyses of house contents and their spatial distribution contribute to our understandings of specific household practices and, consequently, the organization of Roman domestic life.
