Title: Notes on the art and architecture of East Galway in the vicinity of Ahascragh

Abstract: These notes are the result of fieldwork in East Galway in October 2016 and June 2017.1 They were intended as a pilot study for a future Buildings of Ireland (Pevsner) guide for the counties of Galway and Mayo. Unfortunately, this has since been halted due to a lack of funding. The style of writing adopted here is dense and brief and is similar to the 1960s Shell Guide – perhaps still the greatest guidebook for touring in Ireland –, co-written by the renowned Galwayman Michael Morris, Lord Killanin.2 It is hoped that these notes, and the extensive footnotes attached, will be useful to those interested in the history, art, architecture, and antiquities of this particularly rewarding corner of East Galway – the town of Ahascragh and its rural hinterland within a radius of 3-4 miles. All of the opinions are mine. Many of the buildings noted are situated on private property and their inclusion here does not constitute any right of access.
