Abstract: Governors Island is only 730 metres from the tip of Manhattan, but remains virtually unknown to most New Yorkers. Overlooked by gleaming skyscrapers on some of the most expensive real estate in the world, Governors Island has been on the edge of New York City's history and, until very recently, has been a notable absence from both large- and small-scale developments in the Lower Manhattan and harbour area.
