|Abstract:||This chapter is concerned with providing pre-higher education entry support for mature students who are taking Access to higher education (HE) courses at further education (FE) colleges in England. Preparation for HE is particularly important for mature students and those coming from families without experience of HE; they face particular difficulties in getting used to the academic and social life at university. We review research evidence that indicates a link between students’ success in HE and their pre-entry preparation, and we review conventional approaches to supporting students’ preparation for HE. We go on to describe a pilot called eAccess, developed to exploit the potential of e-mentoring using Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs) now common in universities and FE colleges, and to provide pre HE entry support for mature students on Access to HE courses (Access students). Our evaluation of eAccess yielded lessons learned in implementing the pilot: the outcomes, the barriers and the success factors.
